Trust the Professionals

If you want to buy a house, you will need to be involved in conveyancing.  Sure, you can do it yourself, but unless you know exactly what you are doing, you will probably be wasting your time.  Clearly, you need someone to do it for you, but how can you trust that they are doing a good job for you?  After all, we live in difficult economic times and everybody is doing all they can to just make a little bit of extra money.  The problem is, while the people we work with are trying to make extra money, we are trying to save money.  Hence, it becomes a battle of strengths on who ends up being the winner in the end.  This has opened up an entire market for scam artists who try their best to make you think you are getting a great deal (hence making you the winner because you think you have spent less), but actually making a great deal just for them, since they are likely to deliver nothing at all in terms of what you have paid for.  Learning about how this works should help you in making good life and business choices.

What Do Con Artists Do?

Basically, a con artist’s role is to make you think you are getting a great deal, when they are actually just collecting your money and doing nothing for it in return.  In terms of conveyancing, but also in terms of any other type of business, they bank on the fact that you don’t know the first thing about that field of work.  If you did, you wouldn’t be out looking for them.  It’s the age old story of a woman going to get her car fixed and being charged on average twice as much as a bloke, because they presume – and often quite rightly so – that a woman knows absolutely nothing about cars.
As soon as a con artist knows that you don’t know your subject, they will have you by the short and curlies.  They will be able to make you believe that you are getting a fantastic deal.  This is because all con artists have the gift of the gab.  The reality is that they probably don’t know their subject any more than you do, but they just know how to blag it
One last thing to consider is that you are at higher risk of elaborate scams and schemes if you live in major cities, London being the top city for scams.  So, if this is where you live – or want to live – be extra vigilant.

What Can You Do about It?

The most important question is how you can make sure that you don’t fall victim to any scams.  There are a number of things you can do.  When you are requesting quotations, you will be doing so from a company that has to, by law, be registered with some sort of professional body.  Whether you are looking for a gardener or a lawyer, they all have to have the proper registration to do the job you want them to do.  Don’t assume that they are telling the truth if they tell you they are, even if they give you their registration number.  Always follow this up.
One other thing you can do is play them at their own game.  Learn a few words that are part of the jargon in the industry you are interested in and throw those into conversation to see their reaction.  Works every time.
