Some of the most expensive cars of 2012 range from track only collectors’ items through to the fastest and most powerful vehicles currently available on the road. Their distinction comes down to the use of rare materials, and significant spending on ensuring that the cars run faster and handle better than many of the more affordably priced models on the market. Among the most expensive cars in the world are the Ferrari 599XX, the Zenvo ST1, and the Bugatti Veyron Supersport, currently the most expensive. It’s worth briefly reviewing some of these expensive cars, which are out of the price range of the vast majority of the car buying population.
1 - Bugatti Veyron Supersport
The most expensive car in the world, the Bugatti Veryon Supersport costs around $2.6 million. It can reach 0-60mph in just 2.4 seconds on a 16 cylinder engine, and has been in production since 2010. Small changes have been made since then to improve the power of the engine, which currently hits around 1,200 bhp. Efforts have also been made to make the car more aerodynamic, resulting in a theoretical top speed of 267 miles per hour. However, on the road the car can make around 258 miles without threatening the tyres. Sang Noir, Black Carbon and Edition Merveilleux versions have been produced, and the car currently holds the world land speed record for its type.
2 - Ferrari 599XX
This concept Ferrari 599XX is not technically road worthy, and is instead driven on tracks. It costs around $2 million, and modifies a Ferrari 599 GTV. Features include 720 hp, and a highly aerodynamic weight as the result of carbon fibre body parts and brake pads. The car made its debut at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show, and is primarily raced on circuit. Recent updates include Pirelli tyres, which weigh 35 kg less than standard Ferrari models. Other features include a bare metal cockpit with a roll cage, as well as carbon ceramic brakes, and a console mounted rotary knob for balancing out the vehicle.
3 - Zenvo ST1
A Danish concept car, the Zenvo ST1 can manage 1,250 hp with a V8 engine, and hits 60 mph in just 2.9 seconds. The car costs about $1.8 million, and is relatively compact at 15.3 feet long, 6.7 feet wide, and 3.9 feet tall. Carbon fibre parts help to reduce the overall weight of the car. The limited production of the vehicle, with only 15 made, contributes to the overall cost of the car. Able to hit 233mph, owners also have the option of investing $5,000 on tyre replacements, and $30,000 for a luxury luggage trunk.
4 - 2012 Koenigsegg Agera R
A Swedish made car with a 5.0 litre V8 engine, the 2012 Koeningsegg Agera R costs about $1.7 million. A carbon fire sports car, the R type is distinguished by using biofuel rather than petrol, making it perhaps the most environmentally friendly super car. First unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Agera R has Michelin tyres, a Thule Roof Box, and a top speed of 260 mph in track conditions. 1 inch aluminium wheels, and a dynamic rear wing shape are enhanced by hollow fibre wheels, and hybrid fuel options.
5 - Maybach Landaulet
Bringing back a classic landaulet design, this German car has a 12 cylinder engine, and can reach 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds. Costing around $1.4 million, the Landaulet has a V12 biturbo gasoline engine, and a retractable roof. A partition can also be made between the rear seats and a chauffeur, with the roof opening and closing in 16 seconds. The car’s interior trim is made up of black and white leather. Extra features include a Bose sound system, 21 speakers, video monitors and DVD screens, Bluetooth, and Parktronic drivers’ assist.
