Best Recipe Apps

Gone are the days when home chefs had recipes on index cards strewn around the kitchen, in a messy notebook or in stacks of cookbooks with bookmarks and dog-eared pages. Now if you have a mobile device, you can download apps with thousands of recipes and literally carry them around in your pocket.

Most are low-priced -- much cheaper than a book -- and some are free!
If you are one of Martha Stewart's many fans, check out her app "Martha’s Everyday Food: Fresh & Easy Recipes" for $3.99. This app pulls recipes directly from Martha's magazine, Everyday Food. These recipes are quick, easy and appropriate for families. Martha's team also adds helpful tips to each recipe.

George Duran, Food Network personality and author of "Take This Dish and Twist It," offers recipes from his new cookbook for free. The app is called "RecipePal" and it includes a digital shopping list along with each recipe. Some examples of George's unique cuisine include Pina Colada Crisp, Pepperoni Pizza Soup, Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake and PB&J Bread Pudding.

"Epicurious Recipes and Shopping List" is free app from the website Epicurious.com. This app includes 30,000 recipes from your favorite magazines like Self, Bon Appetit and Gourmet. The app makes it easy to email both recipes and shopping lists to your family and friends. You can also read reviews of each recipe by Epicurious members.

If you enjoy grilling and barbecuing, "Weber's On the Grill," a mobile grilling companion, is for you. This app is $4.99 and includes 265 grilling recipes, plus 40 additional recipes for sauces, marinades and rubs. It allows you to create a shopping list directly from the recipes that you can take with you to the supermarket. And there's a timer that can help you grill everything perfectly.

"Whole Foods Market Recipes" is a free app that can help you cook healthy and delicious food for your family. These recipes use only the best organic and natural ingredients. You can also find recipes that are low-fat, gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan. Each recipe comes with instructions for cooking and nutritional information. You can even tell the app which ingredients you have in your pantry, and it can suggest recipes using those ingredients.

Real Simple magazine brings you "Real Simple Recipes: No Time to Cook?" For $4.99, you get access to 850 dinner recipes that take 40 minutes or less to prepare. The app also can direct you to low-calorie recipes, those you can prepare ahead of time and those that require no cooking. Perfect for busy families.
