Imagine
the perfect winter scene: Fresh show, laughing children and a warm, cosy fire.
Then again, it’s usually cold, wet, and not very pleasant in the UK. Finding
ways to keep your family, especially young children, entertained during the
weekends and the Christmas holidays can be a hassle. Don’t let the grey skies
and cold weather get you down, as there are plenty of ways to make sure
everyone is happy.
Museum Visits
Making a day trip of visiting the British Museum, Natural History Museum or the Science Museum in London can be an exciting experience. These museums are free, but special exhibitions require purchased tickets. There are plenty more museums in London that suit different tastes, for the picky children and the culture hungry adults. If you’re unable to get to London, search for museums in your area to get to know the local history.
Arts and crafts
It’s getting close to the end of year holidays. Whether you celebrate Halloween, Christmas or thanksgiving, decorations help you to get into the seasonal spirit. Buying new ones each year can get expensive. Instead of spending the time shopping for new wall hangings and table decorations, make them yourself with your family. They’re personalised to those who made them and can make great gifts.
Seasonal Events
There are many activities that only come around in the winter. Temporary ice skating rinks are built in cities, where finding a permanent venue can be difficult. Make the effort to experience a winter market. Although they require you to be outside, they have stalls and food that are something to marvel at. Each year they are different, and they’re unique to most of what you will find on a weekly market.
Home Entertainment
Most of us dislike going out in the winter. Staying inside means that the options for activities are used up quickly. A new home entertainment system for 2012 can increase the options available to you. Connecting your television to a Google tv device will connect it to the internet and still run as smooth as a laptop. With internet capabilities and an Android operating system, you can download apps and play games on your television, providing entertainment for both kids and adults.
Baking and Cooking
The time for simple summer salads has passed and the stews and warming soup season has come. Spending time in the kitchen doesn’t have to be a chore. The dropping temperature is a great incentive to try out new recipes. The family can also get involved too, as it’s never too early to introduce children to cooking. You can also bake sweet festive treats for everyone to enjoy and they make a nice change to the shop bought variety.
Keep an eye out for events in your area that only come once a year. Embrace the cold weather and get your mittens out, as there’s still a lot to do when winter comes around. You don’t have to spend a lot to keep everyone happy in the winter.
