No
matter what type of business you operate, you’re going to need computers. That
means you’ll need computer monitors. Monitors are vital considerations for all
businesses, as they provide the means to see what’s going on and actually
interact with the computer. However, they’re not all the same and you’re going
to need a few tips to ensure that you get the right solution for your needs.
Not All Monitors Are the Same
First, if you’re currently using (or even thinking of buying) old style CRT monitors, think again. While they do offer the advantage of longevity, they’re really not a good solution. In fact, you’ll find that they’re really not widely available except in used condition. Instead, opt for flat-panel technology.
When it comes to flat-panel computer monitors, LCD technology reigns supreme. You’ll find other technologies out there, but LCD screens are the most affordable, and most beneficial for your business. Of course, you’ll find that technology varies here, as well.
What to Buy
When talking about computer monitors, size seems to be the first thing that buyers gravitate towards. However, it’s really not all about size. The key word in computer monitors is resolution. Ideally, you’ll purchase a monitor that offers 1920 by 1080 resolution (that’s full HD). Lower resolutions can work with smaller monitors (think under 25 inches). However, HD monitors are cheaper than television sets with the same resolution (so you don’t need to worry about bankrupting yourself here).
Of course, size does matter. You’ll find that larger monitors offer significant benefits, including reduced eyestrain and the ability to really maximize screen real estate. Larger monitors also facilitate multitasking by allowing users to have more than one window open side by side.
Touch Screen Technology
Touch screen technology is hot right now, thanks in large part to smartphones and tablets. You’ll find that touch screen monitors are available for purchase and use with your computer system, but these might not be the right choice for you. In all reality, having a touch screen really doesn’t offer any benefits for the average business user, though they can be ideal solutions in some situations (particularly those where a physical keyboard is unwanted).
If you choose to go the touch screen route, understand that you’ll be paying more and potentially shelling out more cash for a technology that won’t really be used. Think long and hard about that decision before you choose your monitor.
Monitors for Telecommunications
If you’ll be purchasing monitors to set up a teleconference center, there are a few things to consider. First, do you want a single large monitor that all attendees can see, or several smaller monitors for individual communication sessions? Will the monitor need to display several different conference callers at the same time, or just one? How much space do you have available to you?
Projectors
Projectors are vital tools in the business world, and offer the ability to collaborate, share information in a meeting and more. Projectors are very different from monitors, though. When it comes to projection technology, you’ll find that DLP is currently the reigning champion. This offers excellent picture clarity and high definition, and it’s relatively affordable. There are quite a few resolutions available, but the general rule of thumb is buy the highest resolution you can afford. You’ll also want to make sure that you get the right connection type – USB is the most versatile, but not all projectors connect via USB. Some have to connect via monitor connections, so make sure you choose carefully here.
Choosing the right monitor or projector doesn’t have to be an onerous chore – choose wisely based on the tips above.
