How Mobile Phones Became a Part of Everyday Life

The Motorola DynaTAC was the first handheld mobile phone with the 12 standard buttons and 9 additional keys. It was approved and made commercially available in 1983 for the first time. The first mobile phone was an indication, a sign of transition from industrial age to information age.  In the 80s and 90s, not everyone owned a mobile phone. Only the richest and the most powerful people such as big businessmen and professionals owned a mobile phone.

Change in the 90s

This started changing in the mid 90s. This was the period when mobile phones became sleeker and cheaper through innovation and technological advancement. They started gaining popularity amongst masses as they became readily available and affordable.
Early mobile phones were used only for calling and texting.  They were very popular because of the convenience they offered which ensured that we could stay in touch with people no matter where we were. It was particularly useful in times of some emergency like a medical emergency or reporting a criminal activity. Also, they offered a means of communication in places where there were no fixed line telephones available.

The Rise of the Smartphone

Over the years, mobile phone usage has increased significantly. Mobile phones gained popularity because of the convenience they offer. People can now make appointments, receive voice mails, locate a friend, respond to emails and so forth.
Innovations in mobile phone technology have led to the advent of a new mode of doing business called M-commerce. M-commerce technology enables a consumer to perform commercial transactions from a mobile phone irrespective of the physical location of the person. Examples of such transactions include paying bills, mobile banking, buying movie tickets, booking a holiday and so forth. It has become a major part of our daily life.
Mobiles have an inbuilt GPS system which help us in getting directions and ensure that we never get lost.

Phones in the Workplace

The workplace is not the same as it used to be years ago. Everything can be accomplished it the palm of the hand. Businessmen do not need a computer to access their emails. They can do it on the move through the push mail technology.  Mobile phones have replaced PDAs. Daily schedules and appointments can be maintained using mobile phones. Even huge transactions are made through mobile apps. According to eBay reports, over 2,000 automobiles are sold via eBay Motors app. This week PayPal revealed that this year a bulldozer worth $48,000 was sold through a mobile transaction. So far it is the largest transaction of the year.

Phones for Entertainment

Mobile phones have penetrated the entertainment arena, too. Manufacturers have incorporated many multimedia functions in to mobile phones.
These features offer a number of entertainment options such as listen to music, watch videos, play games etc. People have become addicted to using mobile phones.
Every hour they check their mails, update status messages and use apps on mobile phones. On an average day, a teenager can send over 100 messages. People feel lost without their phones. The market saturation of mobile phones has increased and will keep on increasing well into the future.
