The Future Of Biofuels

With all the recent concerns about the world’s dependency on oil and its environmental and economic costs, people are very eager for a new, more affordable alternative that is harmless to our environment. Biofuels might just be that next energy source. In spite of this, we should first analyse the pros and cons of using biofuel as a replacement for petroleum as the dominant fuel source.

Advantages of Biofuels:

Biofuels are a very environmentally friendly fuel which can help to stop the current rising levels of greenhouse gasses that oil has had a major causative factor in. According to recent energy reports, this is mostly due to the fact that biofuels can be produced from numerous organic sources like plant material, algae and even bacteria. Also, these organic materials are available in abundance and be cultivated on a massive scale. Therefore, biofuel is an energy source that is basically limitless.

It will end the west’s need to depend on OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) and other foreign countries for their energy requirements and can therefore potentially help to bring world peace. Furthermore, biofuels can also help stimulate the local job market jobs and can thus have the potential to aid the global economy that has been in a slump for a while now. Biofuels are also far safer to handle than petroleum and therefore cause less long term health effects on the human body.

As you can see these are all numerous advantages in favour of this amazing new energy source, but just like all anything else, there are also some drawbacks involved.

Disadvantages of Biofuels:

Currently, even though biofuels produce much less CO2 emissions, the machines that are used to cultivate the produce needed for biofuel, still have some problems with greenhouse gas emissions.

Our current process of producing biofuels is way too expensive to afford on a massive scale. Biofuels still need billions of dollars of research money to find a manufacturing process that will produce them at a much more affordable rate. Also, there aren’t nearly enough biofuel enabled cars to be able to take full advantage of this fuel source. We will need to invest a lot of money to change the transportation infrastructure to allow us to take advantage of this natural fuel.
Once we are able to construct large biofuel producing plants, we will need to find a method to deal with the bad smell which is a by-product of biofuel production.

According to recent energy reports -Biofuels are the energy source of the future, so the sooner we can get it to the manufacturing process and made available to the masses the faster we will be able to solve the energy problems we are currently facing.
