Discord Unveils Social SDK to Enhance In-Game Communication and Player Engagement

Discord has announced the launch of Discord Social SDK, a developer toolkit designed to integrate Discord’s social features directly into games, enhancing player connectivity and multiplayer experiences. Available at no cost, the SDK allows developers to provide in-game voice chat, messaging, and social networking, even for players without a Discord account.

Already adopted by several game studios, including Theorycraft Games, Facepunch Studios, and Tencent Games, the SDK enables seamless social interactions through a unified friends list, deep-linked game invites, and cross-platform messaging. Players can invite friends to their game sessions instantly and stay connected both in and out of the game.

Enhancing Game Discovery and Social Play

With over 200 million monthly active users, Discord has become a key platform for game discovery. Research shows that 72% of Discord users play games with friends weekly, and when players game with at least one friend, their sessions last up to 7x longer. By integrating Discord’s social layer, developers can increase engagement and retention.

The SDK offers several key features:

  • Unified Friends List – Players can access their Discord and in-game friends from one list.
  • Deep-Link Game Invites – One-click invites allow instant party or lobby access.
  • Rich Presence – Displays in-game activity on Discord, driving organic game discovery.
  • Flexible Account Requirements – Players don’t need a Discord account to use social features, though linking enhances the experience.

Expanding In-Game Communication

Discord is also introducing new closed beta features to enhance communication:

  • Cross-Platform Messaging – Conversations continue across PC, console, and mobile.
  • Linked Channels – In-game chats can sync with Discord servers for persistent communication.
  • Voice Chat – High-quality in-game voice powered by Discord’s proven technology.

Developers can request access to these features in the closed beta, further strengthening the connection between games and the Discord ecosystem. With Discord Social SDK, studios of all sizes can build immersive, socially connected gaming experiences.
